William D. Rhine, MD

Research Interests: ECMO heart-lung bypass, inhaled nitric oxide and neonatal brain injury, neonatology quality improvement

Dr. William Rhine has been a part of the medical academic community at Stanford for over 30 years. After medical school, residency and fellowship training there, he has rised through its faculty ranks and is now a Professor of Pediatrics. He has been the medical director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital for over 10 years. He has also served as president of the LPCH Medical Staff, acting pediatrics residency program director and president of the Board of Governors of the Stanford Medical Center Alumni Association. Dr. Rhine has conducted research and published in several areas including ECMO heart-lung bypass, inhaled nitric oxide and neonatal brain injury. More recently, he has been involved in neonatology quality improvement at the state and national levels, leading the Packard multi-disciplinary team in the last five Vermont-Oxford Network collaboratives. Since 2000, Dr. Rhine has served on the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative board, contributing to several QI toolkits and teaching at associated workshops. Besides helping babies and their families for many years, Dr. Rhine has experienced family-centered care on a personal basis, joining forces with his wife, Dana, to raise their six sons.
